Corner-to-corner squares
This is the first square of my next project, which is the baby version of this blanket:
You can find a tutorial for the corner-to-corner pattern here for the squares. The edging for the squares and outer border is the classic granny square pattern.
Yarn for the adult twin-sized version: 4 skeins of Caron Big Cakes in Shadowberry (no longer available) for the squares, 1 skein of Caron Simply Soft in Black for the square and overall borders (for full, queen, or king-sized beds you will need more yarn and more squares). For the squares you can choose any brand of self-striping yarn of any colorway and any color solids for the borders for the squares and overall blanket.
Yarn for the baby version: about 2/3 skein of Loops & Threads Snuggly Wuggly Big yarn in Pee Wee Prints, about 1/4 to 1/3 skein of Loops & Threads Snuggly Wuggly Big yarn in Soft Yellow for the border. (Michael's, but this particular type of yarn is no longer available. Use whatever large skein of baby yarn you can get -- Lion Brand Pound of Love, Bernat Baby, etc.)
The baby version will use an H (5 mm) crochet hook. The adult version used a J (6.0 mm) crochet hook.
The corner-to-corner pattern for squares is the following:
Row 1: Ch 6. Skip 3 ch, dc in remaining 3 ch. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 6, skip 3 ch, dc in remaining 3 ch. Sl st into loop, ch 3, 3 dc in loop, turn.
Rows 3-10: Repeat Row 2, working across with the inc and sl st, ch 3, 3 dc in loop until Row 10 with 10 clusters on the row. For the adult version, work the inc until Row 12 with 12 clusters on the row.
Row 11 (13 for adult version): sl st into each of the 3 dc and loop, ch 3, dc 3 in loop. Repeat across in each loop to the last loop. Sl st in last loop, turn.
Rows 12-19 (14-23 adult): repeat Row 11, working the dec across until the last row, which should have only one cluster. Cut yarn, fasten off and weave in ends.
The adult twin-sized version had 35 square (5x7). Larger sizes will require more squares and thus more yarn. The baby version will have 20 squares.
For the granny square border for the adult version in Caron Simply Soft Black:
Edging for squares was 1 round only: Pull up yarn in stitch or space close to a corner and ch 3. Cluster 3 dc in same stitch or space near corner, *(ch 3 and skip 3 sts, cluster 3 dc in next stitch or space) to corner, 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc in corner.* Repeat from * to * for each side until you have completely stitched around the square. Cut yarn, fasten off, and weave in ends.
I used sl st to put the squares and resulting strips together. If you prefer another method of attaching squares and strips together, that also will work.
Edging for the overall blanket was 2 rounds:
Round 1: Pull up yarn in stitch or space close to a corner and ch 3. Sl st in top of ch 3.
Round 2: Ch 3. Cut yarn, fasten off and weave in ends.
For the baby version, I have not decided whether to stitch with the granny square stitch or sc around with 3 sc in the corner for the edging for both squares and overall blanket. I will post an update when I get to that point, especially as I do not have a lot of the Soft Yellow yarn.
Stay tuned for further updates and the pattern for the edging. 😁😊
